ALLERGIES / SENSITIVITIES:

About Gluten- Gluten is a protein that is present in wheat, rye, and barley. These grains are commonly found in cereals, pastas, breads, and various snack components such as pretzels and crackers.

FAQ- Are any of your products Gluten Free? Many of our Good Sense® products do not contain wheat; however, they are still manufactured on shared equipment with wheat containing ingredients. People with a known gluten intolerance or gluten enteropathy (Celiac Disease) should consult with their physician to determine what products may be suitable and safe for their diets.

Peanuts and Tree Nuts- Our facility processes and packages peanuts and tree nuts. We employ Good Manufacturing Principles (GMP) and perform allergen cleans to our equipment to reduce the risk of cross contamination in-between processing and packaging of these ingredients. While many of our Good Sense® products do not contain these ingredients, keep in mind that they are processed on shared equipment with peanuts and tree nuts. While we adhere to strict GMP in our facility, many consumers have varying degrees of sensitivity and allergy to these ingredients and should consult with their physician regarding any concerns they might have.

Understanding the label- Two of the main areas that consumers should look at are the Ingredient statement and the “Contains” statement. Reading the ingredient statement can give you an idea of what’s in the product and prompt you to avoid any listed allergens that may be a concern for you. Often times there are ingredients listed that may sound complicated and are not easily understood, this is where the “Contains” statement becomes very important. The “Contains” statement should list all allergens that are present in the product and be an alert for you to avoid consumption if it’s a known allergen for you. When in doubt, always consult with your physician first before consuming.

HEART HEALTH:

Did you know that the USDA food guide pyramid suggests choosing most of your dietary fats from fish, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils? These foods are rich in poly and monounsaturated fats and Omega-3 fats, largely considered the “Good Fats” which can combat some of the risk factors associated with heart disease. Some other key nutrients to consider for a healthy heart are Antioxidants and Dietary Fiber. The following are some nutritional tid-bits regarding these nutrients and the role they play for improving heart health.

Fat Facts- Saturated fat, Trans-fatty acids and Dietary Cholesterol can raise blood cholesterol and can be detrimental to heart health. The American Heart Association recommends the following dietary guidelines:

Limit saturated fat intake to less than 7 percent of total daily calories

Limit trans fat intake to less than 1 percent of total daily calories

Limit cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg per day, for most people.

If you have coronary heart disease or your LDL cholesterol level is 100 mg/dL or greater, limit your cholesterol intake to less than 200 milligrams a day

We are proud to offer a variety of snack products that are cholesterol free, low in saturated fat, and contain 0grams of trans-fat per serving. Many of our Good Sense® Nut, Seed, and Trail Mix products are rich in Mono and Polyunsaturated fats. Some scientific studies suggest that these “Good Fats” help lower LDL cholesterol when eaten as part of a low-saturated and trans-fat diet.

“Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts (such as almonds, walnuts, or pecans), as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease”.

Whether it’s for snacking or baking, here are just a few great products to look for:

Raw Almonds

Walnuts

Pecans

Sunflower Nuts

Omega-3 Fatty Acids- There has been a great deal reported on the many health benefits that Omega-3 fatty acids can have when part of a healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of unsaturated fats; some common dietary sources include but are not limited to, cold water fish, walnuts, flaxseed, and soybeans. Some of the purported benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids include their role in decreasing triglyceride levels, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure regulation. Including Omeg-3 fatty acids in your diet can be the “heart smart” thing to do!

We invite you to enjoy some of our Good Sense® Soynut, Flaxseed, and Walnut products. And for those of you looking for a sweet treat that also offers a health benefit, try our new Omega Munchies®, combining the Omega-3 goodness of walnuts and flaxseed with just the right amount of sweetness.

Antioxidants- Antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E play a vital role in combating free radicals in the blood stream, protecting both arterial and heart health. Fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can be a wonderful source of many of these antioxidants and contain other phytochemicals that can improve heart health and decrease other risk factors associated with disease.

Many of our Good Sense® snacks contain a “Good” or “Excellent” source of these valuable dietary antioxidants. Check out the nutrition facts panel to find out if your favorite snack contains 10% (Good Source) or 20% or more (Excellent Source) of these vital nutrients. Dietary Fiber- Fiber’s role in heart health has long been studied and well associated with its relationship in reducing blood cholesterol and influencing balance with blood sugar levels. Soluble fiber such as those found in whole grains, oats, fruits, and vegetables when included in the diet can help reduce your risk of heart disease.

“Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol and rich in fruits, vegetables, and grain products that contain some types of dietary fiber, particularly soluble fiber, may reduce the risk of heart disease, a disease associated with many factors”.

We have a variety of low salt and no salt nut, seed, dried fruit, and trail mix products that meet this demand and we are continuing to look at new products that are formulated to meet our customers’ needs.

Soy- There has been numerous scientific studies that have explored the relationship of soy intake and disease prevention. Soybean products contain polyphenols (isoflavones and phytoestrogens) that have been linked to reduced risk of heart disease and hormone regulation. More studies are needed to validate the association of dietary soy intake and disease risk. Consult with your physician and dietician for dietary recommendations regarding soy intake and your health.

For those consumers looking to add a little Soy to their diets, we are pleased to offer a great variety of Roasted and Seasoned Soynuts; an easy and tasty way to add soy to your diet! Here are some of our current Soynut product offerings:

Stress and B-Vitamins- Have you had your B’s today? Stress related symptoms of depression, anxiety, and poor mood may in part be attributed to inadequate intake of essential B-vitamins. There has also been research involving dietary intake of Folic Acid (Folate) in women who are capable of becoming pregnant and reduction of risk in neural tube defects among newborns.

“Healthful diets with adequate folate may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord defect”.

Many of our Good Sense® Nut, Seed, and Trail mix products provide a good to excellent source of B-vitamins and Folate. Check out our Sunflower and Soynut offerings, naturally rich in many B vitamins and Folate!

ALL NATURAL

Many of our Good Sense® products are considered “All Natural”. Our definition of All Natural includes those products that include no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or partially hydrogenated oils. We continue to look at healthier ways to create new products and to improve our existing products by using more “All Natural” ingredients.

FAQ- How do I know if a product is All Natural?

Read the ingredient statement! One of the main areas that consumers should look at is the ingredient statement. Reading the ingredient statement can give you an idea of what’s in the product and if it contains any artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or partially hydrogenated oils. Often times there are ingredients listed that may sound complicated and are not easily understood. The FDA has not established a definition for “natural”, thus the consumer needs to investigate carefully before buying. Many ingredients that may be considered “All Natural” have undergone a minimal amount of processing. We process and package a variety of products that we consider All Natural that have undergone a minimal amount of processing. We roast our nut and seed products in 100% pure canola oil and utilize NO partially hydrogenated oils during roasting.

FAQ- Some Good Sense® products state “All Natural” on the package while many do not. If it doesn’t state “All Natural” can we assume that the product is not All Natural?

No! Many of our products are considered “All Natural” but we do not call this out on every package. Once again, reading the ingredient statement should give you an idea of whether or not a product should be considered All Natural. If you have any questions or concerns regarding whether or not one of your favorite Good Sense® snacks should be considered “All Natural”, please send us an email to service@waymouth.com.
